All-New Split Tailgate on the 2025 Ford Expedition
Ford completely redesigned the 2025 model year of the Expedition. The last time they did a complete overhaul was back in 2018, and we have to say, we love the updates they made here in 2025. From exterior to technology to features, the Expedition has improved in every way. We could write pages about all of the updates they made, but today, we’ll highlight the brand-new Split Tailgate feature. This comes standard on every trim level of the 2025 Expedition.
What is the Split Tailgate?
The Split Tailgate allows you to lift 75% of the tailgate, while leaving the bottom quarter as is. Then, once the top is already opened, you can lower the bottom quarter. Both of these are automatic and do not require any manual lifting or lowering. This prevents any groceries or loose items from falling out of the car! With the bottom quarter up, everything will stay nice and secure until you’re ready to lower it. With the third row up, you’ll see 22.9 cubic feet of storage, and with the third row down, that increases to 69.9 cubic feet.
How to Use the Split Tailgate
To lift the top three quarters of the tailgate, you will press a button that is right underneath the Expedition badging towards the center of the vehicle. It will automatically raise to reveal another button on the bottom quarter of the tailgate. When you press this button, the vehicle will automatically lower the bottom quarter. To put the bottom half up, press the same button as you did to lower it. Wait until it is fully restored and locked, and then you can click a button on the top left of the tailgate to bring the top back down.
