How to Check Your Car’s Tire Air Pressure
Keeping your tires properly inflated is one of the easiest ways to stay safe on the road and it only takes a few minutes. Today, we’ll walk through how to check your tire pressure correctly and why it matters.
Step 1: Find the Recommended Tire Pressure
Before grabbing a gauge, it’s important to know the correct PSI for your vehicle. Don’t rely on the number printed on the tire itself: That’s the maximum pressure, not the recommended one. Instead, open your driver’s side door and look for the sticker on the door jamb. This label lists the proper PSI for both your front and rear tires.
Step 2: Use a Tire Pressure Gauge
A digital or manual tire pressure gauge works just fine. Remove the valve cap from the tire, then press the gauge straight onto the valve stem until you get a reading.
Step 3: Check the PSI
Compare the number on your gauge to the PSI listed on your door sticker.
- If it matches, you’re good to go.
- If it’s low, add air.
- If it’s too high, gently press the valve stem to release some air.
You can add air at most local gas stations, or you’re always welcome to stop by our Jeff Belzer’s Ford location in New Prague – we’re happy to help.
Step 4: Fill Slowly and Recheck
When adding air, go slowly and recheck the pressure as you go. Tire pressure can change with the weather, especially during colder months, so checking your tires once a month is a great habit to get into.
